The Public Art Fund was established by Community Foundation of the Lowcountry in 2006 with the purpose of procuring and placing world class art in the public realm across Hilton Head Island.
Every two years the Public Art Fund Advisory Committee invites sculptors from around the world to submit entries of large-scale sculptures to be part of this exciting outdoor art exhibition. For each exhibition we receive hundreds of entries. A jury, comprised of community leaders, Public Art Fund Advisory Committee members and curatorial consultants, select 20 pieces for the exhibition. These pieces are then temporarily installed at Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn for a four month period, allowing visitors to stroll the grounds at their leisure. There are no entrance fees and the exhibition is open during museum hours. The exhibition draws tens of thousands of visitors, both locals and out-of-towners.
At the end of the exhibition, the Public Art Fund purchases one piece that is donated to the Town of Hilton Head Island for their growing public art collection.
The 2018 Public Art Exhibition on Hilton Head Island runs from September 28, 2018 through January 31, 2019.
