Neil Simon’s Broadway hit comedy Barefoot in the Parkcloses the Lean Ensemble Theater season with a light-hearted look at a pair of newlyweds, Corie and Paul Bratter, who are just returning from a six-day luxurious honeymoon at the Plaza. Their bubble of bliss is quickly punctured by reality as they slog up five flights to the dumpy Greenwich Village apartment they now share. They open the door to a tiny flat with a non- functioning radiator, a leaky closet, and a skylight with a big hole in it. To make matters worse, it’s February.
While Paul, a buttoned-up lawyer, tallies up the problems, free-spirited Corie gushes about the possibilities. She sets about painting and wallpapering only to be interrupted by the surprise arrival of her widowed mother who has just huffed and puffed her way up the stairs. Her mother, it turns out, is a hypochondriac with opinions—lots of them. When Corie schemes to set the prim older woman up with the kimono-clad Albanian “artiste” named Velasco who lives in the attic, more comic complications ensue.
Directed by Lean’s Blake White, this high-energy romp features Thomas Azar, Sheila Kadra, and Jennifer Webb along with ensemble members Jim Stark and Mimi Wyche.
