Costume Designer Eloise Petro has given Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the Arts Center’s Spring smash comedy-musical, a healthy dose of haute couture. Petro is the Arts Center’s Costume Shop Manager and also did the design work for the entire show.

Set in the lavish French Riviera, the show has numerous nods to top French fashion designers. The character of Muriel has an Yves St. Laurent elegance, and in some numbers plenty of sequins and sparkle, while the ingénue Christine glows in a couple of canary-yellow Dior-esque dresses. Odes to the House of Chanel are seen throughout as well. Though all of this was accomplished within the confines of the budget, the result is nonetheless elegant and trés chic!

Petro said, “While Scoundrels is a contemporary show, I drew from other periods as well, to offer a hint of high-fashion nostalgia.” In fact, in the show’s dénouement, the statuesque ensemble is clad in nautical-hued resort-wear reminiscent of Monte Carlo in the 60s.

Petro herself recently took a vacation to Paris, and gained more inspiration in her costume design for Scoundrels. “I found gorgeous Chanel bouclé for a song while I was in France, and of course took full advantage of the chance to be there and be inspired while browsing the quaint shops.”

An archive of her vision was pinned to her Pinterest board, which she calls “Riviera over the Decades.”

Having worked with Petro before, BroadwayWorld award-winning Director and Choreographer Casey Colgan who’s at the helm of this production said he’s delighted to be doing the show and “adores Eloise’s sense of style, not to mention her work ethic.” “It’s a different type of show from what I’ve done before,” said Colgan. “Audiences should find it to be hip, modern and fun, but still with the bells and whistles they love in a classic musical. The show is truly a riotously funny escape. And, Eloise and her team have done an incredible job costuming the show with both glamour and pizazz.”

In addition to stunning costumes, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels provides irreverent, non-stop fun, and a night of sheer entertainment!
